Communication can be a very tricky business. It can be difficult to reconcile what is said with what is meant at times. Speaking can be difficult at times, but trying to interpret someone’s body language along with other language barriers are a few obstacles to effective communication. It has been the case that one party completely miscommunicates with the other due to a misunderstanding.
We have learned to speak in our childhood and we grew our verbal skills through engaging in conversations. While most of us spent our time speaking, some of us never learned to listen, which is key to effective communication. It may sound weird yet it’s correct. This may sound a little off to a person who is listening to his coworking blather on about his fantasies, but believe me when I say it is.
Without listening abilities, communication would just be annoying sounds that are thrown at you. The problem with active listening is that it takes huge patience and sometimes it gets quite annoying. Active listening is more difficult to learn than it was to learn to speak as a child. Someone cannot acquire the skill to listen by simply interacting with others. Active listening requires the listener in the conversation to seek out the words and understand the speaker’s intent behind saying those words. A listener needs to fish out the emotions, defensiveness, cultural differences, and jargon.
Most of us just listen to things but it’s extremely hard to pay attention to what’s being said. One of the important elements of communication is getting effective feedback. Maybe by picking up on non-verbal cues or audible ones — but feedback in a conversation is important. It is always crucial to know that what’s being said was correctly conveyed to the listener. Feedback when provided by the listener helps the speaker to make sure that the listener gets the context.
There are two ways a speaker can get feedback by asking closed-ended questions and open-ended questions to the listener. Asking questions like, Do you get my point? or asking Does that makes sense to you? are ways to get quick closed-ended responses.
Using an open-ended question is an excellent strategy. The listener would summarise the message that was being stated and in return, they would expose any misunderstandings. Open-ended questions will be like — What do you think about this? or maybe What do you think about this? Using these questions will allow us to obtain clarification between the listener and the speaker.
In this fast-moving world, feedbacks are crucial for businesses. Feedback from employees, clients, and customers plays an important role in creating and maintaining a business institution. Ensure that the information shared is effectively communicated either through management or advertising. It is critical to keep in mind that not only the message is going through but also is being interpreted correctly.
Once, someone gains an understanding of how information is being perceived and interpreted, they will know how to proceed with communication by removing things that feedback has shown to be ineffective and replacing them with solutions known to produce the results wanted.
Ensuring that everyone understands what’s being said, be it marketing, the management or normal interaction is progress towards better communication and positive feedback intake. Communication that is based on feedback is the strongest tool in an effective workplace or someplace else.
